Even More Reasons to Hate Doctors

Monday, July 18, 2005
I had a doctor's "appointment' this morning. Why you ask do I put that in quotes. Well I had an appointment "scheduled" for 9:30. I arrived promptly for my appoinment and filled out the normal paperwork. I than proceded to wait one 1.5 hours for my appointment to start. I was not put into a room until 11:10. Can you believe that. I mean seriously. What is the point of even scheduling an appointment in that case?

That really sucks. I wonder if your doctor is way too conservative on his per-patient times and massively overbooking. To be that backed up by 9:30 in the morning, though, something else must have happened.

If they are backed up the receptionist should tell people they are running behind and give you an estimate and let you go get coffee or something. They should take a cell number and call you 10 minutes before they will be able to see you. This same thing happened to me twice at the same doctor and I told him he had a scheduling problem and I would not be back. It is just rude.

I have yet to visit any doctor or clinic in the US without an experience similar to this. In fact, even urgent care facilities are often like this. I've sat around at Huntington Memorial hospital with a friend who had burns on his hands and face while he waited over an hour to be treated.

I'll never cease to be astounded at the people who claim that a pricey private health care system ensures a higher level of professionalism.

I have Kaiser. And the doctor shows up within 20 minutes of the appointed time. Seldom fails.

I have two regular doctors and I almost never wait. I get there and they call me in, the doctor sees me and I'm out. Once the doctor was delayed because of some emergency and the receptionist told me the problem. And apologized! There is no excuse for poor scheduling or for lack of respect for the patients' time. Urgent care is a little different because there are no appointments so they just have to deal with whatever walks through the door. I'm much more understanding w/ that situation.

Doctors pretty much suck, I've found. I work in publishing; most of what we put out is medical. I deal one-on-one with the doctors and they don't really listen. Well to other people. They listn to themselves and their huge, over-inflated egos. Why should they care about YOUR schedule? Don't you know THEY'RE BUSY! :)
