Where is My Tall Gene?

Wednesday, April 20, 2005
What's with all these really tall Chinese guys? Sun Ming Ming is a potential pick in this year's NBA draft. He is 7'8". What's up with that? Where all all these tall Chinese guys, like Yao Ming, coming from and how come I didn't get some of this tall DNA?

Scroll down the link and look at the size of this guys hands. Go pick up a basketball for comparison. Its frightening; it's like he is holding a tennis ball or something.

when i was in china, one oft he university students asked my friend and i why americans are so tall, because the chinese typically are not. my friend repolied, "we drink milk." maybe we started a new trend there and now there are a bunch of tall chinese milk drinkers. LOL

I'd guess that both of these two are not genetically predispositioned to be tall, but have/had a pituitary abnormality which caused the growth. It may be that certain Chinese guys merely have a genetic tendency toward pituitary problems. And what are you complaining about? You're one of the tallest Chinese guys I know.

Am I the only one who has heard the rumor that the PRC has been dosing young, taller-than-average atheletes with Human Growth Hormone to make them even taller? After the fact, HGH is difficult to detect, except that those who recieved it may have outsized hands and feet - at least, this is what they were saying about that Australian swimmer kid (Ian Thorpe?) during the Sydney Olympics. I don't really believe this, I just like collect conspiracy theories, even (or, especially) ones that would get sliced to shreds by Occam's Razor. It's much more realistic to think that in a country of more than a billion people there would be at least a few who were way above average height. How lucky for their government that they just happened to be interested in basketball...
